Franchisor
The company that owns a brand and its business system, and grants others the right to operate under it. In our marketplace, franchisors are the brands looking to expand into the MENA region.
Franchisee
The individual or company that buys the right to operate a business under a franchisor's brand and system, in a defined location or territory.
Franchise agreement
The legal contract that sets out the rights and obligations of both parties — term, territory, fees, standards, training and renewal.
Master franchise
The right to develop and sub-franchise a brand across an entire country or region. A master franchisee acts as the brand's local partner, opening their own units and recruiting other franchisees.
Area developer
A franchisee granted the right to open a set number of units in a defined territory over an agreed schedule, usually without the right to sub-franchise.
Single-unit franchise
The right to operate one location. The most common and accessible entry point into franchising.
Multi-unit franchise
The right to open and operate several units of the same brand, often at a preferential structure.
Franchise fee (initial fee)
The one-time, upfront fee paid to the franchisor to join the system and access the brand, training and launch support.
Royalty fee
An ongoing fee, usually a percentage of gross sales, paid to the franchisor for continued use of the brand and system.
Marketing / advertising fee
An ongoing contribution, typically a percentage of sales, pooled by the franchisor to fund brand-wide marketing.
Total investment
The full estimated cost to open a unit — franchise fee plus fit-out, equipment, initial stock, working capital and other setup costs. Figures vary by brand, format and market.
Territory
The geographic area in which a franchisee has the right to operate, sometimes with exclusivity so no other franchisee of the same brand can open there.
Disclosure document
A document provided by the franchisor detailing the business, costs, obligations and track record, so a prospective franchisee can make an informed decision.
Term & renewal
The length of the franchise agreement and the conditions under which it can be renewed at the end of that period.
Franchise broker
An intermediary — like MENA Franchises — that connects investors with suitable franchise brands and guides both sides through evaluation, application and signing.
Turnkey
A franchise setup delivered ready to operate, with site, fit-out and equipment handled so the franchisee can open with minimal setup work.
Conversion franchise
When an existing independent business rebrands and joins a franchise system, adopting its brand and standards.
Free zone
Designated economic zones in the UAE and wider Gulf that allow 100% foreign ownership and tax incentives — a common structure for franchise businesses in the region.
